About the Gala
The One Injustice is One Too Many Gala brings together hundreds of community members and increases awareness about AJP’s work. Net proceeds from this event support the work of AJP to seek justice for the innocent, wrongfully imprisoned, and those who have suffered a manifest injustice.
This year’s program will include stories from directly impacted people represented by the Arizona Justice Project.
We cannot do this work without your support. Help us make this year’s gala the best one yet!
Speaker
We are excited to present this year’s keynote speaker, Kirk Bloodsworth!
Kirk Bloodsworth
Kirk Bloodsworth is the first person to be sentenced to death and then later exonerated by DNA evidence. He spent a total of 8 years, 10 months, and 19 days in prison, two of those years were on death row in Maryland. After DNA testing excluded Kirk as the perpetrator, he was finally exonerated in 1993.
Upon his release, Kirk became a voice for the innocent and advocated for broader use of DNA testing. He met with legislators on Capitol Hill and testified at numerous hearings, one of those hearings included our Founder, the late Larry Hammond. This advocacy work played a critical role in the passage of the 2004 Federal Justice for All Act, which included the Innocence Protection Act. Part of the Innocence Protection Act was named in honor of Kirk (“Bloodsworth” Post-Conviction DNA Testing Program), which created federal funding to support post-conviction case review and DNA testing. In 2008, Arizona became one of the first states in the country to receive a Bloodsworth grant.
Kirk is also the former Executive Director of Witness to Innocence, which is an organization “of, by, and for death row exonerees” to “empower exonerated death row survivors to be the most powerful and effective voice in the fight to end the death penalty and reform the justice system in the United States.”
Kirk’s compassion and determination has made a significant impact on the movement to abolish the death penalty. His advocacy alongside his fellow exonerated death row survivors was influential in eight of the nine states that have abolished the death penalty in the last 25 years, including his home state of Maryland.
