Moments from Last Year’s Gala
Speaker
We are excited to present this year’s keynote speaker, Calvin Duncan, author of The Jailhouse Lawyer!
Calvin Duncan
Calvin Duncan is the founder and director of the Light of Justice program, focused on improving legal access for incarcerated individuals, and the author of the bestselling memoir The Jailhouse Lawyer from Penguin Press (2025).
Falsely accused of murder at the age of nineteen, he endured a life sentence without the possibility of parole in Louisiana prisons for more than twenty-eight years. While incarcerated, he became an inmate counsel substitute, or jailhouse lawyer, helping hundreds of fellow prisoners challenge wrongful convictions and unjust sentences.
His efforts have contributed to landmark U.S. Supreme Court decisions, including Smith v. Cain (2012) and Ramos v. Louisiana (2020). Duncan holds a JD from Lewis & Clark Law School and resides in New Orleans, where he continues his advocacy on behalf of those still behind bars.
Event Program
8:00 PM:
Make Your Impact
Your opportunity to help provide a second chance to those who have been wrongfully convicted, or suffered multiple manifest injustices, within the criminal justice system
Sponsorship Packages:
Every time an accused person goes to prison without having received a fair trial, we are one step closer to the loss of our own freedoms.
Our gala makes it possible for our organization to raise funds in support of our mission to seek justice for the innocent, the wrongfully imprisoned, and those who have suffered manifest injustice under Arizona’s criminal justice system.
